Here is a realistic week-by-week look at where the time goes, and what makes projects run long.
Before Construction: Planning and Permits (2–6 Weeks)
Design decisions, material selections, and contractor scheduling happen first, and in Miami-Dade and Broward most bathroom remodels involving plumbing or electrical changes require permits. Review times vary by city; tile-and-vanity refreshes without trade work move faster than layout changes. Ordering long-lead items early, vanities, tile, fixtures, custom glass, is the single best schedule protector.
Week 1: Demolition and Rough-In Begins
The old bathroom comes out: fixtures, tile, and, in a gut remodel, everything to the studs. Demolition often reveals the surprises, hidden leaks, corroded valves, outdated wiring, which is why good contractors inspect and price contingencies before closing walls. Plumbing and electrical rough-in starts once the space is open.
Week 2: Rough Inspections and Waterproofing
Rough plumbing and electrical are inspected before anything gets covered. Then comes the step that separates a durable bathroom from a future problem: waterproofing. Shower pans are built and sloped, membranes applied, and in many jurisdictions the pan is inspected as well. Rushing this week is how bathrooms fail years later.
Weeks 3–4: Tile
Tile is the most labor-intensive phase and the most visible one. Floors, shower walls, niches, and accent work each take their time, and large-format tile and intricate patterns take more. Quality tile work cannot be compressed; this is where patience pays visibly.
Week 5: Fixtures, Vanity, and Finishes
Toilets, faucets, the vanity and countertop, lighting, mirrors, paint, and trim go in. The room starts looking like a bathroom again, and trades overlap carefully to keep the sequence tight.
Week 6: Glass, Punch List, and Final Inspection
Frameless shower glass is measured only after tile is complete, then fabricated to the exact opening, which typically takes one to two weeks; scheduling the measurement the day tile finishes keeps this off the critical path.
